A linguist by training, David J. Peterson offers an overview of language creation, covering its history from Tolkien's creations and Klingon to today's global community of conlangers. He will share stories of how he built Dothraki and Valyrian (Game of Thrones) and discuss the essential tools necessary for inventing and evolving new languages. Lecture: Sustainable Neighborhoods for Happiness
Scott Cloutier, assistant professor and senior sustainability scientist at Arizona State University, and PhD student Beth Ann Morrison, who works with Cloutier to establish the Happiness and Sustainability Research Lab at ASU, will introduce the Sustainable Neighborhoods for Happiness Index and a process to assess and enhance a neighborhood's opportunities for happiness through sustainable design.
