GIS Seminar: Conservation Subdivision Design: using bluffland protection to aid residential development
Clint Sloss, ISU graduate student in community and regional planning, established a bluffland protection district model and identified potential sites adjacent to scenic areas to minimize the ecological effects of residential development. He then used Randall Arendt's Conservation Subdivision Design methodology to establish a regional conservation map for Allamakee County.
Black Faces of War
Robert V. Morris is the author of the new illustrated history Black Faces of War: A Legacy of Honor from the American Revolution to Today. The grandson and son of two decorated army officers, Morris founded the Fort Des Moines Memorial Park and the WWII Iowa Tuskegee Airmen Memorial at the Des Moines International Airport. His documentary Tradition And Valor was broadcast on Iowa Public Television.

Chuck Richards, author, illustrator and associate professor in art and design, will share aspects of his picture books for young readers, including the artwork currently on display in the "Relationships" exhibition. He will be joined by Amy Popillion, ISU human development and family studies, who will discuss historical and contemporary trends in children's literature and help put Chuck's books and illustrations in context.

Trouble in the Trailer Park
"Trouble in the Trailer Park," Lee Rood, The Des Moines Register. An investigative reporter, Rood has written a series of articles over the last year on health, safety and legal issues arising in Iowa's mobile home parks. This is a critical topic for anyone interested in social justice, urban planning, design, housing advocacy, social services, etc. Come learn about this issue that is having an impact on communities in Iowa and the Midwest.

Ken Smith is the landscape architect handling the new design of Nollen Plaza in downtown Des Moines. Trained in both design and the fine arts, he explores the relationship between art, contemporary culture, and landscape. Smith owns a landscape design firm in New York City with an office in Irvine, Calif. He is a 1972 graduate of Iowa State University.
Lecture: Game development
Game developers Mike Boxleiter and Greg Wohlwend of Mikengreg Games Co. will reveal their process for developing Flash, Unity and iPhone games in relatively short amounts of time. Projects covered will include Solipskier, Liferaft: Zero, Fig. 8 among others. Learn from working game code, assets and numerous prototypes what it takes to finish a game and apply it to your own projects. All are welcome to attend.

"The Next Phase of Martian Exploration: The Search for Life," Peter Smith, University of Arizona. Smith was responsible for the Phoenix Mars Mission and participated in many of NASA's space missions. He is a recent recipient of the American Geographical Society's Cullum Geographical Medal and Arizona's first Thomas R. Brown Distinguished Chair in Integrative Science.
