Day of Insects
The third annual Day of Insects (DOI) is near and registration is due on February 28. Professionals, academics, advocates and enthusiasts will cover a range of insect related topics. Tiger beetles, bees, flies, ticks, venomous arthropods, mantis husbandry, as well as new species discussions are planned.

In 1940, the John Morrell & Company of Ottumwa, Iowa released a calendar illustrated by N.C. Wyeth. The calendar depicts the top twelve historical events or influential people that helped shape America as determined by Wyeth. "Fighting Hunger: A DNA Engineer's Path to Science and Success," Charles Stewart Jr., research associate at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. Stewart works to understand how plant enzymes make an array of chemicals important to medicine and agriculture. Using the 3D protein structure, he studies the evolution of protein function and how proteins can be engineered to improve the quality and quantity of the world's food supply.

Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty is credited with balancing Minnesota's budget three times without raising taxes, despite record budget deficits. He served ten years in the Minnesota House of Representatives, including four years as House Majority Leader. His new biography is titled Courage to Stand.

Carolina Cruz-Neira is the W. Hansen Hall and Mary Officer Hall/BORSF Endowed Super Chair in Telecommunications in Computer Engineering, and chief scientist of the Louisiana Immersive Technologies Enterprise at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. She will discuss integrating the ability to physically walk and run into a virtual environment, specifically in a CAVE-like virtual reality system.
