An intrepid debater, blogger and podcaster as well as a professor of philosophy at the City University of New York, Massimo Pigliucci focuses on science, pseudoscience and how ordinary citizens can tell the difference. Willow Trellis Workshop
Create your own trellis from willow with artists Pam Dennis and Ryk Weiss. Participants will get an opportunity to artfully construct a trellis perfect for vining and climbing plants. All materials will be provided and no previous experience is necessary. Participants need to bring a small bow saw, sharp anvil pruning shears, small hammer and wire cutters. Pre-registration with pre-payment by Thursday, May 31 is required.
Black Box Arguments and Accountability of Experts to the Public
Sally Jackson is a professor of communication and former CIO at the University of Illinois. Winner of numerous awards in the communication and argumentation fields, she focuses on the design and engineering of processes to promote effective communication in complex situations. Open House: Remembering the Sculpture of Christian Petersen
Christian Petersen (Danish-American, 1885-1961) was the nation's first, permanent sculptor-in-residence at any college, and began his career at Iowa State in 1934. Selected from the permanent Christian Petersen Art Collection this exhibition and gallery walk will focus on 30 sculptures and drawings including some recent acquisitions to the Christian Petersen Art Collection. Gallery walk begins at 2 p.m.

Join local artist Yvonne Brune for a 6-week course exploring the basics of garden and nature drawing, using the indoor and outdoor gardens as inspiration. Learn techniques in pencil, pen and ink, and enrich your drawings with the use of color by working with pastels. Registration with prepayment required by June 2.

Music and Art
Painter Jean-August-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) gave this advice: "If I could make musicians out of you all, it would be to your advantage as painters. All harmony is in nature ... one has to learn to sing true with the pencil or brush ..." In this 6-week course, we'll discuss the co-relationship of music and art and then practice that harmony by producing music.

The event is open to the public and will include tours of the barns (6:30-10:30 a.m.). The discovery center for children will open at 7 a.m. Free samples of milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream will be served, courtesy of Iowa's dairy processors.
