Porter's area of expertise was in structural engineering, particularly in the areas of concrete, masonry, composites and composite structures. He served on numerous academic committees, and served as president of several professional organizations. He received 67 career service awards including Fellow of the American Concrete Institute, Fellow of The Masonry Society, Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Fellow of the American College of Forensic Examiners, and Diplomat of the American Society of Forensic Engineers. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Distinguished Member of ASCE, a CFC (Certified Forensic Consultant) and a Parliamentarian.
