Self-incompatibility systems are a primary source to promote outcrossing and to avoid inbreeding depression in plants. There are different biological and genetic mechanisms behind self-incompatibility. This is a brief overview on the genetics of these mechanisms which can help us to improve or design more successful breeding programs.
