"Association mapping for beta-glucan in North American elite oats" Franco Asoro

In oats, breeding for nutritional content like beta-glucan has been a part of oat research and cultivar development in the USA and Canada. Association analysis in a collection of germplasm has been used as an alternative to traditional mapping to identify markers that are in linkage disequilibrium to QTL of interest. Thus, the objective of this research is to identify molecular markers for beta-glucan thru association mapping. Using a model that accounts for population structure and kinship that exist in elite oat germplasm and FDR = 0.005, several DArT markers were identified. These markers explained only 3 to 6% of variation, if these will be used in marker-assisted selection, this might imply that a selection index with marker score plus phenotypic data should be used.
