"Oil Composition of Low-Phytate Soybean Lines with Genes for Reduced Palmitate Concentration" John Gill (thesis)

Previous efforts to obtain low-phytate soybean lines with low-saturate oil has resulted in lines with a saturates concentration too high for commercial use. The study was to determine whether additional generations of breeding were successful in overcoming the negative association between low-phytate and low-saturates. His results indicate that the low-phytate trait has a pleiotropic effect on saturate synthesis. This pleiotropic effect will make it difficult for soybean breeders to recover low-phytate lines with a saturate concentration low enough for commercial use.
