Opening the 2011-2012 ISU Symphony season is John Mackey's Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra - a thrilling work inspired by Indian and African folk music and American Rock and Roll - and featuring ISU Lecturer in Percussion, Matthew Coley.
Brahms' autumnal Symphony no. 4 in E minor is a lushly romantic and lyrical work featuring Brahms at the heightt of his compositional powers. This powerfully expressive, perfectly constructed symphonic masterpiece encompasses the widest range of emotion in its direct expression and musical craftsmanship.
Matthew Coley, Lecturer in Percussion at Iowa state University is a marimba, percussion, and hammer dulcimer artist, composer, and clinician. Professor Coley ahs presented solo marimba and percussion concerts and has performed a sa soloist with orchestras and ensembles throughout the US and abroad including the Millennium Chamber players, San Francisco Sinfonietta, Kurpfalzisches Kammerorchester Mannheim, and the Moldavian Teleradio Symphony Orchestra.
He is the founding artistic director of SONIC INERTIA, and works frequently in many chamber music settings. He is a meber of SI2 (Sonic Inertia Duo) and maintains an active performing schedule in this innovative percussion duo with Cory Hills.
In 2008, he placed third in the prestigious 5th World Marimba Competitions in Stuttgart, Germany - the only American ever to place. Additionally, Mr. Coley has wond or placed in numerous other soloist competitions including placing third int he 2005 WAMSO/Minnesota Orchestra Young Artist Competition, first place in the 2000 Music Teachers National Association SOlo Percussion Competition and the 200 pPercussive Arts Society (PAS) Marimba COncerto Competittion a,a nd was a finalist int he 2004 Houston Symphony Orchestra Ima HOgg Young Artist Competition. In 1999, Coley was a recipient of the Yamaha Young Performing Artist award.
