Abstract
The growth of human insight into the atomistic structure of matter is traced, starting with the conceptions of the Greek philosophers of Antiquity, through the slow advances in the Middle Ages, into the modern era of expanding natural sciences. It focuses on developments that have generated lasting scientific knowledge through creative speculation subject to the strictures of experimental corroboration as well as logical and mathematical consistency. Special attention is paid to the role of chemistry as well as that of physics in general and to the development of quantum chemistry in particular.
Osborn Club
Members of the Osborn Club at Iowa State are active researchers within the natural or physical sciences. The club provides a forum for exchange of ideas across scientific disciplines. Club members meet monthly from September through May for a program consisting of a social period, dinner and presentation of a research lecture. The lecture portion of the program is open to the public.
