There is intense interest in lepton pair production in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Due to the strong electromagnetic fields generated, perturbative approaches are not suitable. I will present an introduction to our time-dependent non-perturbative formalism for calculating lepton pair production in such collisions. Our approach, called "time-dependent Basis Light-Front Quantization" (tBLFQ) takes into account the production and multiple-scattering of the leptons by the strong electromagnetic fields generated in the collisions. I will compare and contrast our approach with other approaches and make connections with experimental measurements. This introduction is intended to stimulate discourse between theorists and experimentalists on both recent data and future prospects.
