Abstract
Dr. Gourapura's laboratory research focus is on mucosal immunology of food animals infected with infectious and zoonotic diseases. Unlike systemic delivery, mucosal delivery (intranasal) of potent vaccines increases the breadth of cross-protective immunity against infections which cause disease primarily at mucosal sites. This presentation covers the strategies adapted to potentiate cross-protective efficacy of candidate inactivated virus vaccines in a pig model. Gourapura's team used biodegradable nanoparticle and adjuvant based intranasal delivery systems to elicit strong immunity at both mucosal and systemic sites against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) and influenza viruses. Results of his research are encouraging to promote pigs as a potential animal model for biomedical research to develop nanotechnology-based vaccines to improve human health.
