Shashi Buluswar, founder and former director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Institute for Globally Transformative Technologies, wanted to know what scientific breakthroughs could match the polio vaccine in its transformative impact on global human development. After two years of investigation and analysis, his team issued the report “50 Breakthroughs: Critical Scientific and Technological Advances Needed for Sustainable Global Development." It covers needed technologies in a variety of areas, including global health, food security and agricultural development, human rights, education, water resources, digital inclusion, resilience against climate change and access to electricity.
Buluswar is currently CEO of LIGTT's successor, the Institute for Transformative Technologies, and teaches international development at the University of California at Berkeley.
