4d and 5d compounds as a new frontier of anisotropic spin systems

4d and 5d compounds such as iridates and RuCl_3 have recently attracted a lot of attention as possible realizations of the famous honeycomb Kitaev model with its quantum spin liquid ground state and non-Abelian anyon excitations. The studies of these materials have shown strong Kitaev interaction in them. However, other isotropic and anistropic terms of comparable strength also appear in the effective magnetic Hamiltonians of these materials. The study of these complex magnetic Hamiltonians have led to a variety of new phases, such as incommensurate counterrotating spiral with two planes of rotation in beta- and gamma-Li_2IrO_3, classical spin liquid driven by symmetric offdiagonal exchange, and possible spin liquid with net magnetization in Kitaev model with applied magnetic field. In my talk I will introduce these compounds, show the origin of the complex magnetic interactions as a consequence of strong spin-orbit coupling, and discuss their cooperation and competition to produce these phases.
