Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) can offer unparalleled enhancements of solid-state (SS)NMR signals, and even greater savings in experimental time of 4-5 orders of magnitude. We will describe the DNP SSNMR technique and highlight some of the new opportunities that it brings to the studies of materials. These will include: (1) first measurements of undistorted 17 O lineshapes, 1 H- 17 O distances, dynamics of OH groups, and 2D 1 H- 17 O spectra of solids without 17 O isotope enrichment; (2) DNP-enhanced 2D homonuclear and heteronuclear spectroscopy involving lower-gamma nuclei, such as 13 C, 27 Al, 29 Si, 195 Pt and 207 Pb; and (3) DNP-enhanced wideline SSNMR spectroscopy. Applications will include the studies of surfaces of silica, alumina and supported metals, biomass samples, paint films and metal organic frameworks (MOFs).
