Mark Mikel has been at the University of Illinois since 2003, where he is Associate Director of the Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center and Assistant Professor of Crop Sciences. Mark did his undergraduate study at Purdue University, and graduate study (M.S. and Ph.D.) at the University of Illinois. Thereafter, Mark was a corn breeder and research station manager for Illinois Foundation Seeds, Inc. for 20 years actively engaged in product development. During this time, Mark developed the Stiff Stalk inbred FR1064, which was widely used in the late 1990s in hybrid formulas in approximately 7-10% of the U.S. corn acreage.
