Post World War II was a time of great prosperity and idealism in America, as the middle class grew in numbers and in strength financially. As a suburban lifestyle developed, consumerism sky rocketed. The demand for novelty and a significantly larger consuming population led to uniquely American designs, both good and bad but iconic of mass design in the 1950s to 1960s.

New houses need decorating to show off taste and style as new forms of entertaining in the home took place. And of course every suburban home needed a car as this new life outside the city was dependent upon independent transportation. Assistant Curator Adrienne Gennett will discuss many of these functional, fun, and crazy objects that epitomize mid-century design in America.
