"Women Artists in the Art on Campus Collection," join interpretative specialist Brooke Rogers as she delves further into the unique women that have made their mark on Iowa State's artful campus. One installment of a five-part, one-day series of in-person campus art tours led by University Museums. Registration required.

Celebrating Iowa State's Public Art
Friday, May 9, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
A day-long celebration of Iowa State's public art. The celebration will consist of five 50-min long free public tours hosted by University Museums staff and docents. Each tour is themed and will cover different public works of art on campus. For in-person programs, please register in advance on the University Museums' website. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, in-person programs will have a limited number of spots available for registration on a first-come, first-served basis. Masks are required for all program attendees per Iowa State University policy. We kindly ask that all attendees respect physical distancing during tours. Photography is permitted.

9-10 a.m., "Campus Beautiful," director and chief curator Lynette Pohlman

An aesthetically beautifully campus was a top priority for Iowa State University founding members Adonijah Welch and Peter Melendy. With their initial guidance and forethought, Iowa State transformed from tallgrass prairie in 1858 to a university campus noted for its lush landscape, unique architecture and ever growing public art collection. On this tour join University Museums Director and Chief Curator, Lynette Pohlman, as she explores the evolution of the Art on Campus Collection. This tour will begin at the Elizabeth and Byron Anderson Sculpture Garden, please meet at the Bighorn sculpture by Gwynn Murrill.

11a.m.-Noon, "Recent Art on Campus Acquisitions and Collection Care," curator Sydney Marshall

Iowa State University is home to one of the largest campus public art programs in the United States. Over 2,500 public works of art make up the Art on Campus Collection, and are located across campus in buildings, courtyards, open spaces and classrooms. Learn more about the recently acquired public works of art and discover first-hand how these artworks are taken care of with University Museums' Curator, Sydney Marshall. This tour will begin at the Elizabeth and Byron Anderson Sculpture Garden, please meet at the Bighorn sculpture by Gwynn Murrill.

Noon-1 p.m., "Science and Art in the Art on Campus Collection," curators Adrienne Gennett and Allison Sheridan

Traditionally, art and science have been treated as two separate disciplines, but when they are studied together it is clear to see the impact one has on the other. A great deal of creativity is required to make scientific breakthroughs, and art is just as often an expression of, or a product of, scientific knowledge. Join University Museum's Curators Adrienne Gennett and Allison Sheridan as they explore the intersections of art and science in the Art on Campus Collection. This tour will begin at the South entrance of the Molecular Biology Building.

1-2 p.m., "Art on Campus Highlights," docent Rae Reilly

With over 2,500 public works of art in the Art on Campus Collection, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Take a tour with University Museums Docent Rae Reilly as she highlights some of the iconic works of art in the Art on Campus Collection. This tour will begin at the Janis Agri Altar sculpture located inside the Agronomy Hall Courtyard.

3-4 p.m., "Women Artists in the Art on Campus Collection," interpretative specialist, Brooke Rogers

Female artists are widely represented in the Art on Campus Collection. From recognizable figures such as Elizabeth Catlett and Karen LaMonte, to Iowa artists like Rose Frantzen this tour will highlight the diversity of women represented in public art on campus. Join Interpretative Specialist, Brooke Rogers, as she delves further into the unique women that have made their mark on Iowa State's artful campus. This tour will begin at the Elizabeth and Byron Anderson Sculpture Garden, please meet at the Bighorn sculpture by Gwynn Murrill.
