Musical groups and speakers celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King. Members of Shy of a Dozen and the Gospel Soul Innovators will perform. Speakers include Government of the Student Body President Angela Groh, Black Student Alliance President Jonnell Marion, and Historian Katherine Charron. President Geoffroy will present the first Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Advancing One Community Awards. Birthday cake graciously donated by the Campus Dining Services.Students are welcome to join a facilitated discussion in the Col. Pride Lounge following this event.

Iowa Civil Rights Commission Director Ralph Rosenberg; ISU Director of Equal Opportunity and Diversity
Carla Espinoza; and Distinguished Professor of Sociology Cornelia Flora, also Director of the North
Central Regional Center for Rural Development, will discuss the controversial research of Roland Fryer.

TOWARD A UNIFIED THEORY OF BLACK AMERICA - ROLAND FRYER
Harvard economist Roland Fryer, the 2006 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. keynote speaker, uses economic
theory to study race relations in America. His groundbreaking work in using intricate economic theory in
the field of African American studies has garnered the attention beyond academic departments. He is a
Junior Fellow and assistant professor of economics at Harvard who received his doctorate in 2002 from
Pennsylvania State University. Refreshments, booksigning, and facilitated discussion will follow.
