Colloquia: John Atanasoff and the New Civilization
"John Atanasoff and the New Civilization," Minka Zlateva, Sofia University, Bulgaria. Zlateva will discuss the results of a joint effort between students at Iowa State and Sofia University, and the possibilities for its followup in the frame of the United Nations initiative, "Alliance of Civilizations" (www.unaoc.org).

"Just Desserts: A Taste of Chocolate and More." ISU President Gregory Geoffroy and Kathy Geoffroy will host this dessert-laden evening. Local restaurants and chocolatiers will provide a wide range of items, including sugar-free options. All proceeds go toward YWCA Ames-ISU scholarships and programming to empower women and girls, and to eliminate racism.

Corey Moss co-directed, wrote and produced a 78-minute feature documentary Dear Jack about the Jack's Mannequin/Something Corporate singer Andrew McMahon and his bout with leukemia at the age of 22. An ISU alum, Moss is an executive producer at Yahoo! Originals, where he created "Primetime in No Time," the highest-rated show on the Web. He has also written and directed short films. A screening of his film will follow the lecture.

"Mark Twain Tonight!" with Hal Holbrook. A living, breathing American Masterpiece! It is, quite simply, one of the most acclaimed and enduring performances in the history of theater. Nearly 50 years ago, a young actor took the stage in a tiny off-Broadway theatre and introduced the world to a man they'd never forget. The actor was Hal Holbrook. The man was Mark Twain.

"Mississippi River Water Quality: Policy, Farm Landscapes and Hypoxia," Eugene Turner, Louisiana State University. A hybrid oceanographer and wetland ecologist, he is active in the scientific aspects of coastal environmental management. In particular, his work addresses hypoxic zones, or Dead Zones, in which water oxygen levels are reduced to a level that can no longer support living aquatic organisms. Lecture: Phase space and new materials
"Cooking, Fishing and Jogging through Phase Space: A Practical Guide to Discovering and Understanding New Materials," Paul Canfield, ISU physics. He will outline the basic philosophy and techniques needed to search for novel materials, including a combination of intuition, experience, compulsive optimism and a desire to share discovery. A general lecture that will include mildly slanderous asides and references to philosophers living and dead.

A reception in honor of the students, faculty, and staff who were part of ISU's Solar Decathlon team. The team placed 12th in the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C. in October with their solar-powered Interlock House. Nathan Allen, the Maniac of Magic, will open the evening with a performance that is part magic, part comedy, and totally dysfunctional.
