This seminar will be an introduction to U.S. patent law, led by Brian Lally, assistant chief counsel, Intellectual Property Law Division, U.S. Department of Energy. It is open to students, faculty, entrepreneurs and anyone interested in learning more about protecting their inventions and ideas in the marketplace.
Lecture: The Successful Grant Proposal: A Reviewer's Perspective
Hear arts and humanities faculty discuss their experiences on grant review committees. James Andrews (history) will open the workshop with a presentation discussing what a grant review board expects to see in a grant proposal. Next, faculty in the arts and humanities will provide brief, individual presentations. A moderated panel discussion and Q&A session will wrap up the discussion.

"Creating Opportunities for Independence," Karen Keninger, Iowa Department for the Blind. She will speak about what it is like to be blind, how the department's services help people, misconceptions about blindness, public perception and many of the hurdles a blind person must overcome in order to live an independent life.

"Postmen, Poets, and Priests: Literary Responses to the Holocaust," author Alan Rosen. What is literature's special contribution to addressing the Holocaust? Looking at wartime and postwar writing, the lecture will highlight some remarkable literary efforts in variety of styles, languages, and approaches. Latino Research Seminar

Dumas grew up listening to her father, a former Fulbright Scholar, recount the many colorful stories of his life in both Iran and America and decided to write her stories as a gift for her children.

Financial derivatives are contracts whose values are derived from the values of assets such as stocks. The derivative market grew into a massive bubble from about $100 trillion to $516 trillion between 2002 and 2007. "The Mathematics of Financial Derivatives and the Wall Street Crisis," Roselyn Williams. The mathematical theory of simple financial derivatives and look at the relationship between the derivative market and the stock market.

Seymour Hersh is an investigative journalist, author, and regular contributor to the New Yorker on topics of U.S. military operations and national security. In 2004, he broke the story of the U.S. miltary's mistreatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison.
