The College of Design is hosting this event to honor professor emeritus of architecture and dean emeritus Mark Engelbrecht, who died Dec. 30, 2021, in West Des Moines. Following a brief program, colleagues, alumni and friends will have the opportunity to share personal tributes. Refreshments will be served.

Advancing the ADU: A West Coast Comparative Perspective - Shane Phillips
Shane Phillips is an urban planner and policy expert who manages the UCLA Lewis Center Housing Initiative and teaches public policy as an adjunct instructor at USC. He will discuss what it took to make accessory dwelling units (ADUs) a reality in California, the regulatory barriers to their expansion, and how the lessons from West Coast cities could be applied to Iowa.

Closing reception for MFA thesis exhibition by integrated visual arts graduate student Youeun Lee. The show features 22 digital paintings exploring Korean culture through new interpretations of folktales and other traditions.

Architecture Research Exchange: Design Computation for Dynamic Building Facades
Applying dynamic façades is an effective method to improve building performance by controlling energy consumption, daylighting and glare. Architecture associate professor Chengde Wu will present two dynamic façade projects, including their design, simulation, optimization and prototyping processes. The benefits and the limitations of the façades will also be discussed.

Gregory Palermo Celebration of Life
The College of Design and Department of Architecture will host a public celebration of life for Gregory Palermo, FAIA. A professor emeritus of architecture, Palermo died Sunday, March 20, in Ames. Colleagues, alumni and friends are invited to share personal anecdotes and tributes following a formal program at 4:15 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
