Youth Program: Plant Heroes
Become a hero in the fight against the bad guys that threaten plants. Learn to identify common plant problems while you practice scouting and photographing "good" and "bad" insects. Join us for hands-on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) activities that will start you on your way to becoming a plant hero. Workshop: Communicating with Students in Blackboard Learn
In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn how to facilitate communication between you, your students, and among students. We will explore Bb Learn's Messages, Send Email, Announcements, and Group features in a course shell.
Workshop: Capture a Lecture and/or "Flip" a Class with Panopto
Panopto offers a rich set of features for both faculty and students that allows classroom recordings and gives instructors the ability to create rich media resources right from their desks. You may use Pantopo to "flip" your classes so that passive learning (listening to lectures) is done online and active learning (solving problems) is done in class.

Workshop: Designing Your Course to Promote Student Success in Blackboard Learn
This workshop will focus on the simple design tricks for your Blackboard Learn course to help your students navigate your course and stay organized. You will also learn how to track the progress of your students in Grade Center using smart views and color coding. You will see a demonstration and become familiar with the logistics of Retention Center.
Workshop: Pulp Painting
This is a 3 part class on Thursdays, August 14, August 21, and August 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Add color to paper pulp made from natural and recycled fibers, then reshape, dry, and press it to form 3-D paper pulp paintings. Yvonne Brune, of Creative Department, will show you how to make your own pulp - both with a blender and without. All levels of experience are welcome; ages 10 and up.

The workshop will cover more advanced search tools, regular expressions, awk and more advanced bash scripting with conditionals and loops. A follow-up to the Aug. 11 workshop. Registration is full, but a wait list is available.

Argentine Tango Practica Class
This Milonga (dance party) is a multi-level class with lots of time to enjoy the music and dance. From 4 - 5pm moves for beginners are introduced with a different figure each week along with techniques for dancing better.

Conference: University Teaching Seminar
New faculty and teaching assistants are invited to the Iowa State Memorial Union on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 for two sessions (morning and afternoon) of workshops and presentations dedicated to teaching led by the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT).
Laboratory Safety Orientation for grad students
This session is highly recommended for graduate students who will be working in laboratories this year. It's also offered Aug. 20 and 21; attend once. Registration requested.
Training: Finding Research Funding
The COS Pivot searchable database is a tool used by researchers to broaden their funding portfolio and increase their interdisciplinary opportunities. In this hands-on training, you will learn how to identify and connect with public and private funding opportunities. The training is free, but registration is required.
Workshop: Floral Design Series
"Neptune: Garden Style Arrangements" - These arrangements feature a variety of flowers that look just picked from the garden. In a vase inspired by the blue planet, they're sure to please the nature lover.

Conference: New Faculty Orientation
All new tenured, tenure-eligible, and non-tenure-eligible faculty (assistant, associate, or full professors, lecturers, clinicians, and adjunct faculty hired since September 2013) attend an orientation specifically designed for them.

In this hands-on Blackboard Learn workshop you will learn how to create online tests, quizzes, and surveys and learn how to use them effectively within your BbLearn course. You will also learn how to view quiz results, grade, and provide student feedback online or set your quiz to grade and provide feedback automatically.
