Prior to returning to full-time farming in 1992, he served as the National Program Leader for Soil Science for the USDA-Extension Service in Washington, DC. He has also served at the appointment of Iowa governors on the state Environmental Protection Commission. Part of the Iowa State University Campaign 2010 Series.
