"Conceptualizing the Midwest Prairie: Environmental Studies, History and the Visual Imagination," Julie Courtwright, ISU history; Stan Harpole, ISU biology; Margaret LaWare, ISU English; James Pritchard, ISU landscape architecture; and Matt Sivils, ISU English. This brownbag roundtable brings together scholars from varied disciplines to analyze the environment of the Midwest/prairie both past and present.

Much of the prairie has essentially become agricultural land very little of the original tall grass remains, a dramatic and remarkable environmental transformation over recent decades. As part of increased environmental awareness, and a sense of history & identity, efforts have been made to both restore original prairie and to help the public appreciate this natural place that deserves protection. Ecological research of this diverse ecosystem has also been a potent means to raise awareness of the land and its use. These scholars bring literary interpretation, rhetorical analysis, historical understanding and scientific foundation to the topic of the Midwests environment and transformation this is particularly important as environmental studies has increasingly become an interdisciplinary field of study.
