In the years following the Civil War, new forms of forced labor in the American South kept thousands of African Americans in bondage until the onset of World War II. This documentary spans 1865 to 1945, uses archival photographs and dramatic re-enactments, and is filmed on location in Alabama and Georgia. Brian Behnken, associate professor of history, will lead a discussion following the 90-min film. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Series

This film is part of the "Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle" series organized by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Bridging Cultures initiative. Launched in 2013 to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, "Created Equal" aims to encourage public conversations about the changing meanings of freedom and equality in U.S. history.
