Fund-raiser: Root beer floats
Proceeds go to Pages of Promise, a project that ships textbooks to libraries and universities in Africa. The fund-raiser is a project of the Acacia fraternity.
Teenager at Alcatraz
"Teenager at Alcatraz: The Clarence Carnes Story." Carnes, an Oklahoma Choctaw, was the youngest man ever sent to The Rock, and was a key player in the historic Battle of Alcatraz, when armed prisoners seized control. Native American storyteller Tim Tingle recounts Carnes's story based on several hours of recorded interviews with an elderly prison inmate who accompanied Carnes on his Oklahoma crime spree.

"An Engineering Approach to Treatments for Cancer and Infectious Diseases," Chih-Ming Ho, director of the Center for Cell Control, an NIH Nanomedicine Roadmap Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. His research offers an engineering approach to determining optimal drug cocktails for the treatment of cancer and infectious diseases. SAC presents: Fresh Fotos Exhibit Reception
During the fall 2009, 10 freshmen were given digital cameras to document their first year at Iowa State. Five images from each student will be exhibited depicting class, residence halls, friends, athletic events, changing season and ISU's scenic campus. The reception will celebrate last year's participant as well as be the kick off for the new group of freshmen continuing this tradition.

Fire extinguisher training
Environmental Health and Safety and the Ames Fire Department are offering students, faculty and staff the opportunity to get hands-on fire extinguisher safety (rain date is Sept. 24). Stop by the groups' display to learn how to use a fire extinguisher and receive fire safety information. T-shirts will be given away, while supplies last.

Avello Bioenergy co-founders Anthony J.S. Pollard, Jared Brown and Cody Ellens will tell their story. The Iowa-based company uses fast pyrolysis to produce low-carbon products (bioasphalt, boiler fuel, biochar) from renewable biomass resources. This event is free and open to the public.

Iowa State University's Virtual Reality Applications Center will be showing off its 3-D technology during its "Virtual Reality Experience." The tour is free and open to the public, but online registration is required.
