Writing and Illustrating Children's Books: Derek Anderson
Iowa State alumnus Derek Anderson, award-winning illustrator of 21 children's books (five of which he also wrote), will share his work and talk about the process of writing and illustrating books.

Homecoming: Open house and pep rally
A showcase of many events that have taken place at the 5-year-old ISU Alumni Center, including special tours. Enjoy food for purchase, cash bar, and family-friendly tailgate games. The Homecoming pep rally, sponsored by Iowa State University Book Store -- featuring coaches, student-athletes, Yell-Like-Hell finals, and the crowning of Cardinal Court -- will begin at 7 p.m. outside the building.
Paint Your Own Pottery: Homecoming
Join us for a fun exploration of techniques in "painting" bisque. Pick your piece and illustrate your Cyclone Pride! We will have samples for inspiration but your own ideas are always welcome too. Studio fee is $4 for ISU and $5 for public to attend plus the cost of the bisque you select. Pottery will be fired within a week for you to pick up. Pre-registration with payment is not required but a call to reserve a spot is recommended.
Ceremony: Greenlee School Schwartz Award
Barbara Mack, an award-winning media law professor at Iowa State, will be honored as the 2013 winner of the James W. Schwartz Award for Distinguished Service to Journalism and Communication. A 1974 Iowa State graduate, Mack passed away unexpectedly in August 2012. Christine Romans, a 1993 ISU graduate and current CNN anchor, along with colleagues and former students of Barbara Mack, will honor her memory with personal comments at the event.
Planetarium Shows
Are you curious about space? Do you wonder about what you can see in the night sky? If so, bring your questions and come to the ISU Planetarium to learn more. The first show, starting at 6:30 pm will be 20 minutes and for kids. Shows at 7 pm and 7:30 pm and are suitable for all ages. Free tickets for the shows will be available at the door starting at 6:15 pm. Seating is limited.
Cyclone Cinema: White House Down
The Student Union Board presents Cyclone Cinema! This week we will be showing White House Down! Showings are FREE in Carver 101 at 7 and 10 p.m. every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Hope to see you there!

One person wins and everyone else loses in the competitive world of a spelling bee, and even though these kids have been told by their parents that just being there is winning, each of them knows that just isn't true. So how far should each of these elementary students go to win? Not recommended for young children.

The Ragbirds are a fusion of folk rock and pop hooks over danceable world rhythms stirred with a Celtic fiddler's bow.
