Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad will be the the featured speaker at the groundbreaking ceremony for Virgil B. Elings Hall and the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABE) Building No. 2. President Gregory Geoffroy and other dignitaries also will make presentations. A special gift announcement will be made at the groundbreaking ceremonies.

The $107 million project includes three buildings connected by an 8,000-square-foot atrium. Phase two includes both Elings Hall and the second ABE building and is funded through $60.4 million in appropriations from the state of Iowa and $14.1 million in private support. The structures will serve as the new home of the top-ranked Iowa State Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering. Phase one the Biorenewables Research Laboratory was completed and dedicated in the fall of 2010.

One of the lead gifts for phase two has been provided by Virgil Elings of Santa Ynez, Calif. The 1961 engineering graduate committed $5 million toward the project in 2006 and one of the two buildings in phase two was named in his honor by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.

The groundbreaking ceremonies will also include presentations by Iowa State President Gregory L. Geoffroy; State Senator Jack Kibbie, president of the Iowa Senate; State Representative Linda Upmeyer, House Majority Leader; Craig Lang, president of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa; and Bruce Rastetter, president pro tem of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.
