Pell directs the university's program for poverty alleviation and sustainable rural development for developing countries. Her current research includes an interdisciplinary project focused on the relationship between poverty and environmental degradation in Kenya, and a UNICEF-funded study to determine the important stakeholders for food and resource sustainability in Afghanistan.
Her research emphasis has been on the roles of livestock in smallholder farming systems and nutrition constrains caused by other elements of the agricultural system.
