Andrea Cochran, principal of Andrea Cochran Landscape Architecture in San Francisco, will present "Immersive Landscapes," the 2010 P.H. Elwood Lecture in Landscape Architecture. Her presentation will be followed by a reception in conjunction with an exhibition of work by ISU landscape architecture and planning students who studied in Rome this past summer.

Distinguished by its careful consideration of site, climate and existing architecture, Cochran's work is influenced by early Modernist landscape architects such as Dan Kiley, Garrett Eckbo and James Rose, as well as Minimalist artists such as Robert Irwin and Fred Sandbeck. She strives for a seamless integration of landscape, art and architecture that blurs the line between the natural and built environment.

The firm has won a number of significant national and regional awards, including ASLA Honor Awards in general and residential design in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010; landscape design finalist in the 2009 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards; winner of the Allegheny Public Square Park Design Competition for the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh in 2007; National Grand Award for Affordable Housing from Residential Architect Magazine in 2006; and an Energy and Sustainability Honor Award and National Green Building Award from the American Institute of Architects in 2005.

Work by Cochran and her firm has been published in several books, including Andrea Cochran: Landscapes by Mary Myers (Princeton Architectural Press, 2009) and New Garden Design by Zahid Sardar (Gibbs Smith, 2008); and numerous periodicals, such as American Style, The New York Times, Martha Stewart Living, Landscape Architecture, Metropolis, International New Landscape, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Architectural Record and Dwell. Cochran is a frequent lecturer at universities and professional conferences. She holds a Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Rutgers University. She is a Fellow of the ASLA.

The P.H. Elwood Lecture Series in Landscape Architecture was established in 1997 to honor the legacy of professor Philip H. Elwood, who is credited with developing the ISU Department of Landscape Architecture. The lecture series brings renowned practitioners to the Iowa State campus as guest lecturers each fall. This year's lecture is cosponsored by the Department of Landscape Architecture, the College of Design, and the Committee on Lectures, which is funded by the Government of the Student Body.
